Mindful Eating for the Beloved Community - Our program work in global action

Imagine living in a tropical paradise; yet, you cannot afford fresh produce. Furthermore, consider the reality of importing 97% of your food, only to be completely cut off for weeks due to a hurricane. Indeed, these are not just hypothetical scenarios; they are the real-life food insecurity issues faced by many Americans in U.S. territories and the Caribbean.

FIVE PILLARS OF BCAGLOBAL

Our mission is to empower BIPOC individuals within the food system; furthermore, we utilize a framework rooted in mindfulness, sustainability, and social justice. Consequently, these practices allow us to forge meaningful connections. Ultimately, this work strengthens our vision of creating a truly beloved community.

BCA Culinary Futures

Central Harlem has the highest rate of youth disconnection in New York City; specifically, 21.6% of children aged 16-19 are neither working nor in school. This staggering number represents hundreds of young people facing circumstances that limit their chances to succeed. However, at BCAGlobal, we believe every young person deserves access to support, mentorship, and real pathways to a strong future.

To address this, our Culinary & Baking Futures program provides exactly that. Over eight months, Harlem youth gain hands-on culinary training, learn essential job skills, and build confidence with guidance from industry leaders. Furthermore, with the support of Chef Alex Askew and Joanne Baylor, participants discover new possibilities; consequently, they are better prepared for meaningful careers in the food industry.

Regenerative Agriculture in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s food system is fragile; consequently, families feel the impact every day. The island imports nearly 87% of its food, which leaves communities vulnerable to rising prices, supply chain disruptions, and extreme weather. After Hurricane Maria, food insecurity surged from 30% to 85% in just five months, thereby exposing how quickly access to food can disappear.

Despite these challenges, at BCAGlobal, we believe food is medicine and food sovereignty is essential to community health. In alignment with this belief, we are partnering with the USDA, the University of Puerto Rico, and AgroInnova to lead a transformative effort. Specifically, we are rebuilding Puerto Rico’s food system through regenerative farming, which restores soil health, improves crop nutrition, reduces waste, and strengthens long-term resilience for farmers.
