An NLM Grant-Funded Initiative for Community Health and Food Equity

BCAGlobal was awarded funding from the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), to bring the Mindful Eating for the Beloved Community (MEBC) program to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, in partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI).

Through this grant, BCAGlobal worked alongside UVI faculty, local community organizations, and farmers to develop and deliver a culturally grounded, community-informed mindful eating curriculum. Using a “Train the Trainer” model, the program was designed not just to educate, but to build lasting local capacity by equipping health ambassadors, culinary staff, and community members with the tools to lead conversations around food sovereignty and sustainability.

What Is the Mindful Eating for the Beloved Community Initiative?

Launched in 2022 by BCA Global with support from the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), MEBC initiative empowers Virgin Islands communities to adopt healthier, more sustainable food practices.

Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the Beloved Community, the program ensures equitable access to healthy food and helps eliminate hunger and poverty through education, farming, and mindful eating.
